Dress codes have relaxed, but shoes still set the tone of an outfit. Knowing when to choose sneakers and when to go formal makes getting dressed much easier.
When sneakers work
Minimal white or monochrome sneakers work with jeans, chinos and even relaxed tailoring. Keep them clean and they will look sharp at casual offices, dinners and weekend plans.
When to go formal
Interviews, weddings and formal events call for leather — derbies or oxfords in brown or black. Chelsea boots are a smart middle ground for cooler months.
Getting the fit right
- Try shoes on later in the day, when feet are slightly larger.
- Leave roughly a thumb’s width of space in front of your longest toe.
- Walk around — the heel should not slip and the widest part of your foot should feel comfortable.
